change must come

one of these days I will write a book. It will be for little girls. I have no idea what it will be about, but I know what it won’t be. It won’t be about fairies, ponies, princesses, clothes, puppies or shoes. It won’t be about a world where what the heroine wears is integral to the story, or where her pretty face is the best thing about her. The prince may not always be handsome and the step sisters needn’t be ugly. The girl will be active, not passive and her ambitions will be boundless. Kindness and generosity will win the day. There will be movement, vibrancy, thought and choice. There will be adventure not inertia… and it will not be written with the toy marketing in mind.

  1. Saw your blog on a facebook link of a friend. I am totally with you, so may I recommend The Worst Princess by Anna Kemp and Sara Ogilvie, or even Zog by Julia Donaldson for some princess role models more in keeping with the spirit of your future book. And can I make a request that when you write it, there is no reference to pink and it’s girlish appropriateness? Thanks – I can’t wait!
